Thinking of a new car? Add up the cost with our Repair vs. Replace tool
Some of us like to drive Old Faithful until the wheels fall off, and some of us like to buy a new car every few years.
And now, just three years after U.S. automakers nearly hit rock bottom, new car sales are growing so fast that Detroit is having a hard time keeping up.
If you're among the millions of consumers who are considering a new vehicle, we urge you to check out our Repair vs. Replace Calculator before taking that plunge. The calculator will help you see in real dollars how much it will cost to keep your current car running and how that compares to a new-car commitment.
You may also want to consider the following:
- Does your current vehicle meet your needs? (Is buying a new car a luxury or a need?)
- Do you want to take on 5 or 6 years of new car payments?
- By using Star Auto Authority, you know your vehicle has been properly maintained, which means you can keep it on the road for as long as you want to (almost literally). Not to mention, vehicles are substantially more reliable than they were 20 years ago. At 100,000 miles today, a vehicle can still run and look like new.
- Touching up door dings and dents can make your car look like new. If your paint has lost its luster, perhaps a good detailing is in order. Would a shiny, dent-free exterior diminish your urge for a new car?
- Are you comfortable with the state of the economy? Although it's starting to improve, we still face significant challenges. Is now the right time to act, or is it prudent to wait a bit longer?
If you decide to purchase a new car, we're happy to answer any questions you have about choosing that new make and model. Also, remember, you are not bound to the dealer just because your new car is under warranty. Federal law protects your right to have your vehicle maintained by the auto repair shop of your choice. At Star, we'll keep an eye out for warranty items, notify you of those items and can even take the vehicle to the dealer for you.

Guard against the guzzle with these gas-saving guidelines
Gas ain’t cheap. Talk about stating the obvious, right?
Chicago’s gas prices started the New Year at $3.55 per gallon, hit $3.73 mid-January, and within the past week, jumped 32 cents a gallon. We're now looking at upwards of $3.90 in the Chicago area, while the national average is at $3.66.
With these kinds of fuel prices, it makes financial sense to keep track of mileage-robbing issues that can cost you big at the gas pump. While you might not be able to predict or control gas prices, you can take steps to minimize the number of times you need to fill up.
Read on to see what robs your gas mileage
